Online Courses

Online courses are not offered on a regular basis. If you are interested in an online course, please email celac@unm.edu to confirm whether or not it is available. There must be at least 10 students interested in a specific course in order for CELAC to offer it.

Academic Reading

This 8-week online course is designed to allow students to develop the skills that are required to read academic texts actively through the development of reading strategies and vocabulary. This course focuses on strengthening essential academic reading skills such as identifying main ideas and supporting details, supporting claims through in-text evidence, and synthesizing information through summarizing and paraphrasing.

This online course will help students meet these main goals:

  • Identify main ideas, supporting details, and genre of given readings

  • Discuss perspectives of a fiction or non-fiction work to support claims

  • Develop academic vocabulary through word study and context clues

  • Learn to accurately summarize information and paraphrase texts

Course Cost: $400

Academic Writing

This 8-week online course is designed to allow students to learn the skills that are required in order to produce fully developed academic paragraphs and essays. This course focuses on organizing academic writing, developing strong thesis statements, and building effective supporting details.

This online course will help students meet these main goals:

  • Understand and experience each step of the writing process

  • Identify different kinds of compositions

  • Learn to organize information into structures that build successful paragraphs and essays

Course Cost: $400

*TOEFL Preparation Course: iBT (internet-based test)

This online course is designed for students who would like to focus on skills for the TOEFL iBT (internet-based test). It will provide 8 weeks of instruction to help students be more successful on the TOEFL iBT. This course is only offered online and is available to people around the world. You do not have to be a CELAC student to participate in this course!

This online course will help students meet these main goals:

  • Better understand the format of the TOEFL iBT test and its individual sections

  • Develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills required for success on the test

  • Learn strategies for time management and other test-taking skills that will improve performance on the exam

Course Cost: $400 + $21.95 for the Official Guide to the TOEFL Test, Fourth Edition (required) Students may purchase and download the eBook or order the paperback textbook through the official ETS website.
