Mission

The mission of the Center for English Language & American Culture (CELAC) is to provide the highest quality academic English language training for our students, which include international students, faculty, and professionals, as well as community residents.

CELAC provides dedicated support and guidance for English as a second language (ESL) students seeking admission to the University of New Mexico and other U.S. institutions of higher education.

In carrying out its mission, CELAC contributes to the globalization of UNM and the community by increasing the number of international students on campus and by providing language proficiency testing and academic advising for our participants. Further, CELAC provides the opportunity for UNM graduate students to gain ESL teaching experience while also serving as a research site for second language acquisition study and ESL classroom observation for UNM and the state of New Mexico.
