Conditional Admission to UNM

Apply Now

Conditional admission means that a student meets all academic requirements to be admitted to the University of New Mexico, but that they do not meet the English proficiency requirement.

The University of New Mexico can issue an undergraduate conditional admission letter to international students who fall into this category.

Students who receive undergraduate conditional admission must successfully complete the CELAC program at UNM and receive a passing score on the institutional TOEFL with the CELAC Academic Manager’s recommendation to transfer to academic study.

Undergraduate Admission Checklist:

  • ☐ Complete the online UNM undergraduate application at the following link: UNM Undergraduate Application

  • ☐ Pay the UNM application fee.

  • ☐ Pay the $50 non-refundable CELAC application fee and provide proof of payment

    • This fee can be paid online by credit card, by U.S. bank personal check, or international money order made payable to “University of New Mexico”

  • ☐ Complete the CELAC application form

  • ☐ Complete financial guarantee for ONE YEAR

    • Please see “Costs” breakdown for F-1 visa applicants

Once we have received all documents and the student is determined to be eligible, the student will be sent a conditional admission letter from International Admissions. They will also be sent a CELAC acceptance letter and UNM CELAC program I-20 form.

Once the English proficiency level is achieved through CELAC and the student is admitted to UNM, a new I-20 form for academic studies will be issued.

Undergraduate English Proficiency Requirements:

Test TypeRequired Score
TOEFL PBT (paper-based test)520
TOEFL iBT (internet-based test)68

Graduate Admission

In order to apply for graduate conditional admission, applicants must apply directly to the graduate department of interest. Click here for Graduate Application Guidelines by Program and Interest.

The University of New Mexico's International Admissions office cannot offer conditional admission to students who plan to continue with graduate studies after completing CELAC. Admission to graduate programs is program-dependent. However, strong CELAC students often receive admission into the graduate department of their choice.

Graduate English Proficiency Requirements:

TOEFL ITP (paper-based test)550
TOEFL iBT (internet-based test)79
